Report
The weather followed the forcast and the skies emptied themselves virtually continuously for the day. The temptation to cancel the event or hastily rearrange the venue was strong. As there were an unknown number of people coming from an equally unknown range of locations, this would have caused chaos. We decided to press on with what we believed God had called us to do.
We did have to hastily reorganise the way we were going to lay things out at the stadium, however. The stand we had intended to use as the backdrop to the sound-stage was being systematically drowned by the driving rain. By using the stand at the south end of the ground for the 'stage' we were able to set up the PA and instruments in a dry place. Peter and Mark Denscombe and a group of volunteers did a magnificent job in setting everything up.
The day consisted of a praise and worship session followed by a symbolic altar building exercise (see front page and video clip). The purpose of this was to declare an intent to move forward from the disunity of the past and move forward together in the calling of Christ. This preceeded a time of prayer when many prayer leaders spoke into the following topics:
The Church, Revival, The Persecuted Church, Redditch, The Region, The Nation, Youth and Drug Addiction. A prayer for the world was also shared amongst a group of leaders.
Despite the weather, nearly 200 people were at the meeting. Visitors had made the effort to travel from, Lincoln, Tenbury Wells, Worcester, Bidford, Bromsgrove, Birmingham and Erdington. Everyone came determined to tough out the weather and be part of a global prayer meeting involving nearly 500,000,000 Christians in 203 nations. What an awesome day.
Participants represented 14 local churches, Betel of Britain and the World Prayer Centre, Birmingham. The Worship team was made up of musicians and singers from 5 churches.
It was a privilege and a blessing to be at this event. Even though everyone was cold and wet, the atmosphere was warm, the worship was joyful and the prayers from the heart. The presence of God was truly manifest in our midst. One lady came from Birmingham, on her own, because she wanted to be part of the Global Day of Prayer. She commented on how good it was to see so many different churches standing together. Another lady came from Worcester by bus, not even knowing if the buses would enable her to do the return journey. We were honoured to have such people with us.
Several people have shared with us a picture of the Stadium full of people. This year it was by no means full of people, but it certainly was full of the Spirit, who is calling those with ears to hear to prayer.
